Does the Designated Hitter (DH) Make Any Difference?

Most people think the pitcher’s spot is a black hole in the NL lineup that the DH fills out nicely in the AL. Kind of true, when you look at production between just those two batting positions. It is true in every category (but 1 - the obvious Sacrifice). What difference does it really make?
